Communities in Rotherham North are compassionate, caring and willing to help but are sometimes not aware that the way in which they direct their help isn’t always the most beneficial.
We are seeing an increase in reports of begging in our area and we want to ensure that those who are vulnerable and in need are getting help in the correct way. It is important for you to know that there are beds available for those who need one in Rotherham and those you see begging in Parkgate and Dalton are not always homeless but have vulnerabilities which lead them to ask for money. We would like to urge you to think whether giving money into a beggars hand is the best way to help that person and remind you that you don’t have to give cash, there are other ways to help. Have a conversation- many people often feel guilty when they say no to a request for money but that does not mean to say you have to walk by. Ask the person if they are ok and whether or not they are aware of the help available for people on the street. Donate supplies – Local charities are also constantly on the lookout for supplies. For example, good quality clothing, food or cosmetics and toiletries. You can even put together a small support package of essential items like toothpaste, gloves and snacks. Donate knowledge – there are many local places set up to provide help, clothing, meals or other support and referrals. These include St James church, Liberty church, Rotherham Council, Shiloh, Mind charity, Rotherham foodbank. Beggars can also use the BT InLink Kiosks dotted around the town centre to make free calls to any support agencies they might need. Please help us by not giving money to beggars and instead donate to the many charities. Big Thank you from Rotherham North Neighbourhood Team. |
