Rotherham business aid tops £26.6 million
Rotherham Council has paid out over £26.6 million in business rates relief and grants to local businesses since the start of the Coronavirus crisis.
We are responsible for administering the small business grants and business rates relief packages in Rotherham on behalf of the Government.
While the Government was preparing guidance on the schemes, we were encourging local businesses to provide us with details about themselves so that we’d be ready to start issuing the support as soon as the guidance was provided. This has helped us to get the money out to businesses much faster.
We know that this will make a huge difference in helping to keep local businesses afloat, local people in jobs and in helping the local economy to recover quicker when we are in a position to begin the exit from coronavirus restrictions.
If you own a business that is eligible for support, we urge you to apply for funding as soon as possible. Visit our website for details:
Rotherham children secure preferred school places
Away from coronavirus news, yesterday was National Offer Day, when parents found out where their children will be starting Primary school or moving up from Infants to Juniors in September.
We are delighted to confirm that, once again, the vast majority of Rotherham children were offered a place at one of their preferred schools, with 98.3% of Primary and 99.7% of Junior starters being allocated one of their three chosen schools.
This was in spite of an increase in demand, with around 3,100 children being offered places this year – up by 200 on 2019.
Despite the pressure on the system, Rotherham consistently performs above the national average for children being offered one of their preferred school places.
For the small number of children who could not be accommodated at their preferred schools this time, all will be offered a place at either a school in their catchment area or the next nearest school with places available.
Any parent whose child has not been offered a place at their preferred school has the right of appeal, with all cases heard by independent appeals panels for a final legally binding decision. In light of the coronavirus, the Government is currently reviewing how those appeals will be heard.
Anyone wishing to appeal should still do so using the guide on the Council’s website.
