Rotherham Remembers 1918 – 2018

Handmade poppies from all over the world will be on display as Rotherham’s market hall turns red to mark the centenary of the end of World War One.

The Rotherham Poppy Cascade will be officially launched on Monday 22 October, when the display of more than 14,000 lovingly hand-crafted poppies will be unveiled to the public and the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Allan Buckley, will unveil a “Rotherham Remembers” wall of fallen heroes.

The poppies, knitted, sewed and crocheted by volunteers, then hand-sewn onto a hessian background, have been created by local groups and individuals and by people from further afield – including countries as far away as Australia and the USA.

The display will be available to view in Rotherham’s indoor market from October 22 until November 17.

Other dates to note:

• Monday 22 October – Launch of Rotherham, Rawmarsh & Parkgate Branch of the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal 2018
• W/C 29 October onwards – A special exhibition in the York & Lancaster Regimental Museum, Clifton Park, to mark the centenary of the end of WWI
• Wednesday 31 October – Army reservist Robin Hood will pass through Rotherham Town Centre on his charity walk from Scotland to the Cenotaph in London, pulling an 18-stone statue of a Gordon Highlander
• Saturday 10 November – A street party organised by Rotherham’s market traders, in the outdoor covered market
• Sunday 11 November – Armistice Day, Rotherham’s annual Remembrance Day parade and service takes place
