Stunning new apartments unveiled at Broom Valley

Development is part of 1,000 new Council homes target

Forty-four new apartments have been unveiled as part of the latest Rother Living development in Rotherham Council’s ambitious plans to build 1,000 new Council homes in the borough.

The Broom Hayes development consists of:

• 20 x 2 bed apartments available for Shared Ownership
• 12 x 2 bed apartments for Council rent
• 12 x 1 bed apartments for Council rent

The show home opens this week and enquiries and reservations are already being taken from people wanting to snap up a home in the heart of Rotherham.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Amy Brookes, said: “We want to ensure that local residents have access to high quality affordable homes. Broom Hayes is an exciting step forward in the Council’s continued plans to regenerate the borough and make Rotherham a place where people want to live, work and spend their leisure time.”

Want to find out more about shared ownership? With an increase in the cost of housing, shared ownership is a great way of getting an affordable foot on the property ladder. The Council is building homes for shared ownership across the borough, alongside new Council homes for rent. Shared Ownership gives you the ability to buy a small share of your home, and allows you to increase that share over time if you want to. Just three weeks to go to the Rotherham Show!

Rotherham Show returns from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th September and we can’t wait to welcome you! The annual showpiece took a break last year due to the pandemic but plans are well underway to deliver a special event at Clifton Park this year, which has been adapted to ensure we can all enjoy it safely. This year we’ll also be taking the opportunity to relaunch the borough’s cultural offer, which will also see the reopening of the Rotherham Civic Theatre, a return to libraries across local communities, and new exhibitions at Clifton Park Museum. If you’re a grand-master at growing your own, a king of cake making, cracking at crafts or fantastic with flowers, Rotherham Show is the place to showcase your skills! The Made in Rotherham exhibition at the show brings together our borough’s most talented gardeners, crafters and cooks. We’d love to see more first-time entrants showing off the new skills acquired in lockdown! Work starts on major flood defence barrier scheme

Construction work has started on a new multi-million pound Canal Barrier at Forge Island in Rotherham to bolster flood defences.

The £3m scheme at Brown’s Cut (near Rotherham Lock), is near to where the canal separates from the River Don and is designed to help provide flood protection to parts of the town centre and Rotherham Central Station which were badly flooded in 2019.

As part of the Canal Barrier works, the canal-side footpath and cycle route will be closed until 30 July 2022 with a signed diversion in place. The Statutes car park will remain open.

The scheme will compliment the flood alleviation works already completed at Forge Island, ahead of a huge regeneration of the site, which will include a new cinema, hotel and restaurants.

Council outlines £5m Covid recovery package

The Council’s Cabinet will discuss the first phase of Rotherham’s Covid recovery plans on Monday – a £5m package of measures to support those that have been most impacted by the pandemic.

The plans include support for children and young people with mental health and catching-up with lost learning, adults who are shielding or isolating, re-skilling people whose jobs have been impacted, support for carers and help for the homeless.

Councillor Chris Read, Leader of Rotherham Council, said: “The Covid pandemic is not over yet but we know that even when it is, the damage it has wreaked will be felt by the people of Rotherham for many years to come.

“Phase one of our recovery plan for Rotherham aims to provide the support many people of all ages will need to reset, recover and restart over the next seven months. This is the start of a long road to recovery and there is still more we have to do – as a Council and a community – to deal with the on-going impact and legacy of Covid-19 on our residents.””
